Based on the latest reports on the Associated Press, there are at least 400 people dead and 1.5 million people has been impacted by the quake. The Chile earthquake 2010 death toll is expected to climb as Chile attempts to recover from the massive earthquake that has been rattled the country and damaging more than 500,000 homes on early Saturday morning.

“We think the real (death) figure tops 300 and we believe this will continue to grow,” Carmen Fernandez, head of the National Emergency Agency, told the AP.

President Michelle Bachelet, who leaves office March 11, declared a “state of catastrophe” in Chile. “It was a catastrophe of devastating consequences,” she told the AP.

Despite Bachelet not asking for assistance from other countries, President Barack Obama has said the United States “will be there” if needed, the AP reports.

About 90 deaths were counted in the area of Curico, many of whom were between the ages of 50 and 60, according to the AP.

The earthquake destroyed much of the country’s infrastructure including major highways and bridges.

CNN reported that the quake was 1,000 times stronger than the Jan. 12 temblor in Haiti and could be felt in Argentina. The AP reports that the force of the quake was so strong that it also shook parts of Sao Paulo in Brazil, located some 1,800 miles to the east.

The quake in Chile occurred at about 3:34 a.m. Saturday.
